Israeli F-16 fighter jets appear to be carrying cluster munitions during recent strikes, possibly with a specific strategic objective: limiting Iran’s ability to launch long-range ballistic missiles.
The Israeli Air Force released an image of F-16I Sufa aircraft in operation, and the weapons visible under the wings suggest the use of this type of munition, although their internal contents have not yet been confirmed.
The suspicion gains strength after Iranian officials accused the United States of using BLU-91/B air-delivered anti-tank mines, which are part of cluster munition systems. This type of weapon can be used to deny access to strategic areas, such as locations used for storing and launching missiles. According to Israeli military sources, more than 150 fighter jets struck weapons production facilities in Tehran, as well as targets linked to ballistic missiles, in an effort to weaken the country’s military infrastructure.
Experts point out that the shape of the weapons seen in the images, with a rounded nose, visible fuzes, and a structure similar to dispensers, is consistent with cluster bombs, especially models based on the “Tactical Munitions Dispenser” (TMD) system. These devices can carry different types of submunitions, including mines such as the BLU-91/B and BLU-92/B, designed to target vehicles or personnel. The use of these mines could hinder the movement of mobile missile launchers and block access to underground facilities, increasing their vulnerability.
Despite the evidence, there is still no official confirmation that these munitions are being widely used in the conflict. Both cluster munitions and landmines are highly controversial due to the risks they pose to civilians, even after hostilities end. Still, military forces argue for their use under controlled conditions, citing strategic value. If the use of this type of weapon intensifies, further evidence is likely to emerge in the coming days.
